Mind Flip: Changing "I got to" to "I get to"

Okay, grammar police, simmer down. I know "I got to" is not grammatically correct, but it's an easy way to remember this "mind flip." Mind flips are sometimes called "cognitive reframing," or identifying and then changing the way situations, experiences, ideas, and emotions are viewed. I don't know about you, but somehow the phrase"mind flips" is easier to remember, and feels more empowering. Mind flips are also a form of mindfulness and detachment. This first mind flip I'm offering is when you catch yourself saying "I got to" or "I have to." Just using those words denotes obligation, powerlessness, and perhaps even dread. It's a phrase that you use when you are living "in your story." "Living in your story" is a warped way of perceiving your own identity, and often plays out as you being a victim. It's a script that's already been written, and you are merely the player who carries out the sad story. It's a way of perceiving being the victim of your circumstances. "I have to go to work," "I have to take care of....," "I have to ___________, because I am _________." The mind flip offered up this week asks you to take a few moments and really reflect the true motivation of why you do things. When you can insert a reason for why you do what you do, you realize that you are making a conscious choice to do those things. You become filled with purpose, and are empowered. You also may begin to realize that most things are a privilege rather than a burden. "I have to go to the store" becomes "I get to go to the store." "I have to wake up in the night to take care of ______" becomes "I get to wake up in the night to take care of____." Changing "I got to"/"I have to" into "I get to" increases the feelings of contentment, or santosha, and allows you to stop being the victim of your story, and begin to be beneficiary of your blessings.
